DS Review – Scribblenauts

Post Rating

I was like many people who spotted scribblenauts at E3 and though what the hell is this? A game with really no story but you can call up on any item and solve puzzles. Now it’s out time to get dirty.

Gameplay:

This game has a unique style of gameplay… You can call up any type of item to solve a puzzle and acquire the star. That’s where this game gets its uniqueness you can call up god and have him fighting a dinosaur.  Solving puzzles being really creative such as attaching a T-rex to a helicopter and flying it over to the other side.  The game really does strive to be unique in the puzzle category and does a really good job to stand out.

Controls :

My only major issue with this game is the controls… I see why they did it but the way you move really hurts game-play at time causing you to have to restart a puzzle over and over to solve it.

Example – When you have to save a person on the other side of the level with sharks in the water… Helicopter with ropes to attach him and save him… but when you click to attach the ropes the game moves you instead causing you to fall in the water to your death. This was a major headache multiple times.

I’m not the only person who had this issue I’ve heard from a lot of people they’re biggest issue with the game was the shobby controls and they are very correct.

Graphics:

This isn’t its strong point but the levels look plain but that’s because of the look of the game and the limitations of the DS itself. But it really doesn’t hurt the game much since every item does stand out and look fine for what it is. Calling up Albert Einstein it looks like him. Such as calling up Science and you get the Large Hadron Collider that creates a black hole and kills everything.

Sounds:

What sound really? It’s a puzzle game so you really don’t need much in this department really. You do have sounds for each item & person or creature you call up. More than that it’s basic but not like it’s a must have.

Final thoughts:

This game is so much fun trying to figure the best way to solve this puzzles and being creative in the process.  I found myself playing inside the load screen just randomly putting in words to see what I could summon. Making god and a vampire and zombies fight and making a water planet with huge squids fighting dinosaur.  5 cells did a great job on making this game stand out from what else is on the market now. It’s not a pretty game or has the best sound but its fun lots of ways to solve puzzles. As long as the items that are not a copyright you can always call up on it. Who doesn’t want to put a jet pack on a guy and shoot a rail gun at a dinosaur that keeps attacking?  I had the thought this game was going to be one of those games everyone rushes to buy and it just flops. But it was a nice surprise anyone young or older will enjoy it.

Pro :  Challenging game , Lots of levels , lots of items and people to summon up.

Con : shooby control
